SISTAMIX Online Mastering Mastering is a very critical stage which is so often overlooked. It's the FINAL STEP in assuring your mixes sound as good as possible and should not be taken lightly. All commercially released CDs are mastered before release. Your mixes will be checked for overall consistency in EQ and any problems are corrected - levels are optimized and adjusted for each track so that the entire CD has a consistent "perceived" loudness - fade-ins and outs are adjusted - the flow from 1 song to the next is timed for the smoothest transitions - and a Redbook CD master is created for duplication. SISTAMIX offers online mastering services for as low as $29 per song! Online Mastering Checklist - Although mastering may make a bad mix sound better it will not make a bad mix sound good. So get your mix sounding the way you want it before sending it for mastering.
- Try not to make your mix too loud. If there is clipping or distortion in the mix, it cannot be reversed in mastering. Keep your mixes below 0db if at all possible.
- Remove any unwanted noises before you mix. It is easier to remove a noise from an individual track than to try to remove it from a mixed stereo track.
- Removing noise from a stereo track usually means removing some of what you want to keep along with the noise.
- Make a note of any unwanted noises or I might assume they are intentional.
- Make a note of any songs you want faded out. If there is no note I'll assume a song with an abrupt ending is intentional.
- Fix out of tune vocals in the recording or mix stages. This cannot be fixed with mastering.
- The quality of your master is directly related to the files you send. Try to send wav files or aiff files, or audio CDs, instead of mp3s.
- Do not send your only copy!
- Keep a backup of your mixed master.
